Never in my life would I have thought that I would be spending Christmas at the beach. This time of year growing up, I was either outside freezing, finding the perfect hill to sled down, or inside curled up by the fire watching a Christmas movie and sipping hot cocoa—the classic New England Christmas. I never thought the beach, a place I associate with sea gulls, packed coolers, and sunburns, to ever feel like the holidays. But this Christmas, I am at the beach and I have realized that I was wrong.
Christmas isn’t about where you are. It doesn’t matter if there is snow on the ground or if the trees have lost their leaves. What does matter is that those around you is what makes it “feel” like Christmas.
Each family who came to the Oak Island mini sessions not only traveled to the end of an island and over a massive dune to get to this serene setting, but they also showed me that the spirit of Christmas was not to be found in my surroundings. The feeling of Christmas comes when you surround yourself with the ones you love.
