I’ve been coming to Oak Island since childhood and have lived here for a year now. When we moved to OKI, I told my husband that my goal was to try every restaurant on the island. Fast forward a year later and we have NOT done that–eating out in the summer can be a challenge with hour-long waits with a 3 and 5 year old. However, in the fall and winter we were able to try some new places as well as hit our usual favorite spots. Now that summer is coming and I’ll be going into hiding while ya’ll come and enjoy OKI, I thought I’d share my family’s favorite spots and hope they become your favorite too!
My first island spotlight is OKI Scoop Shop and Donuts. I have a huge sweet tooth, so this place is an obvious favorite of mine. The donuts here are sooo dang good! They offer 16 varieties, made to order, so they come out hot, gooey and absolutely delicious. Ordering is easy–a pad of custom menu order forms are on the counter for you to simply grab a sheet and select which donuts you want. PRO TIP: grab an extra blank order form or two to fill out at home, because I guarantee that you will be back for more before your trip is over!
My favorite donuts are the Lighthouse (cinnamon sugar with marshmallow swizzle), Lemonade (original glaze with powdered sugar and lemon citrus swizzle) and French Toast (maple glaze with cinnamon sugar)! BUT, you can also create your own donut with whatever combination of toppings you desire. PRO TIP: if you’re bringing the donuts back to a group of people, cut them all into thirds or quarters so you can try all the flavors, because they are too good to have just one!
While you wait for your piping hot rings of deliciousness, there is a cute outdoor patio with chairs, picnic tables, hopscotch and a photo stand to entertain the kids, so waiting is a breeze.
